'Bill Parcells may be the most iconic football coach of our time. During his decades-long tenure as an NFL coach, he turned failing franchises into contenders. He led the ailing New York Giants to two Super Bowl victories, turned the New England Patriots from a team best known for their drug scandals into an NFL powerhouse, reinvigorated the New York Jets, brought the Dallas Cowboys back to life, and most recently was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He changed the way the game was played, reimagining his teams with ferocious defenses and smashmouth offenses that spawned such great players as Hall of Famers Lawrence Taylor and Curtis Martin. Beloved and controversial but always respected, Parcells gives us a rare inside look at one of football's greatest minds at the most reflective time in his career.'

In this new biography acclaimed sports historian Carlo DeVito (Wellington; Yogi; Scooter) digs deep into Bill Parcells' past to unlock the secrets of what made him who he is today, following him from his childhood, through 15 years of college coaching, to his first big chance in the pros and the year that almost broke him. With more than 3,000 interviews, newspaper and magazine articles, and scores of primary resources, DeVito's book brings Parcells to life as readers have never seen him before.

In January 2000, shortly after the New York Jets ended their '99 season, their coach, Bill Parcells, retired. By then he had won 149 games, lost 106, tied one, led three major pro football teams out of serious slumps, and taken two of them to the Super Bowl. He had made football history; he'd become the NFL's miracle man. Both intimidating and disarming, with a tongue like a whip and the temperament of a tyrant, Bill Parcells joined the failing New York Giants in 1983. By 1990 he'd twice taken the team to the Super Bowl. Three years later he took in tow the downtrodden New England Patriots, whom he propelled to the Super Bowl in his fourth season. He returned to New York in 1997, this time to rally the Jets. In two seasons the team with a lamentable 1–15 record had won a division title and missed the Super Bowl by only a game. In 1999, beleaguered by injuries to key players, the Jets nose-dived, losing six of its first seven games, but Parcells still managed to salvage the season with an 8–8 finish. While this biography candidly assesses the career of a consummate coach, it also examines the driving force that took hold of Parcells early and never let him go. Call it ambition, a dream, bulldog spirit, or perfectionism, it made him one of the winningest coaches in NFL history.

If this were a fairy tale, it would begin, 'Once upon a time there was a very old woman who lived in an enchanted valley high in the mountains. She had magical powers to heal...and people came from all over the kingdom to see her and learn about her mysterious healing powers.' But the story of Hazel Parcells is stranger, more compelling and more magical than any fairy tale. And it is all true.

Award-winning sportswriter Mike Freeman goes beyond day-to-day newspaper journalism and ESPN highlights to take us deep inside the game and reveal the NFL in ways that will surprise the most avid football fans. He travels to the sidelines and into the locker rooms to interview hundreds of players and coaches on their expertise. Breaking the game down to its essential elements -- coaching, offense, and defense -- Freeman profiles in depth three of today's football elite: Jon Gruden, head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Michael Strahan, defensive end for the New York Giants; and Emmitt Smith, the legendary running back. Bloody Sundays goes behind the scenes of the 'secret society' of gay players who play in fear of their lives and careers, studies how the violence of the game ravages the bodies of players, and takes us into the owners' offices to look at the darker side of the sport. Part tribute, part exposé, Bloody Sundays is a vivid portrait of professional football that 'gives you so much to think about that you might find yourself switching off a game to read' (New York Times Book Review).

When the Tuna Went Down to Texas
|Author||: Mike Shropshire|
|Editor||: Harper Collins|
Bill Parcells was living in self-imposed exile from the National Football League sidelines. The Tuna had earned living-legend status after coaching the Giants, Patriots, and Jets from the skid-row district of the NFL and transforming those teams into champions. The final weeks of the 2002 season found Parcells working as an analyst at the ESPN studios. His heart aching, Parcells was like a televangelist with no cripples to heal. The Tuna urgently yearned for another lost cause. In Dallas, Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones—described by author Mike Shropshire as 'a man involved in a heroic struggle to overcome what had been diagnosed as a terminal face-lift'—was suffering through sleepless nights. Although his once-proud pro football powerhouse traveled beneath a banner that read 'America's Team,' it had suffered three straight 5-11 seasons. This team was so sick, it had bedsores. After a clandestine meeting aboard Jones's private jet, parked at a New Jersey airport, Parcells agreed to abandon his East Coast roots and travel south to restore life to the Cowboys. The Tuna and Jones needed each other in the worst kind of way, so a shotgun wedding was performed. The pundits of the national media joined hands and shouted, 'Parcells and Jones can't stand each other! They're too set in their ways! It'll never work!' As usual, the pundits were wrong. With Parcells the ultimate motivator and so-called Jock Whisperer applying his craft, Dallas rolled to a 10-6 regular-season record and shocked the NFL by making the playoffs. When the Tuna Went Down to Texas details the saga of how this unlikely partnership of men 'too brittle for tango lessons, but not yet blind enough for assisted living' amazed the sports world and serves as absolute proof that while the truth is not always stranger than fiction, it's usually a lot funnier.

After bringing home two Super Bowls with the N.Y. Giants, and after taking the hard-luck New England Patriots to their own appearance in the big show, Bill Parcells has performed another miracle: he's transformed the 1-15 Jets into a real contender. All New York's got to do now is wait, because if the coach they call 'Tuna' has his way, it won't be long before his Jets sere up yet another championship. A hard-nosed pro who always shoots from the hip, Parcells is one of pro football's winningest, and often most controversial, head coaches. Always quotable -- love him or hate him -- there's no arguing his success. Because... when the Tuna talks, people listen. Parcells on the '98 AFC race: 'We're kind of stacked up like club sandwiches.' Parcells on winning: 'Winning doesn't feel as good as it used to and losing feels worse.... This is my crack cocaine. I know it's like an assembly line, okay? And I know that some day the line is going to stop, and that's when you're J-A-G. Just another guy.' Parcells on NFL stars: 'Dumb players to dumb things. Smart players seldom do dumb things.' Parcells on his weight: 'Hey, listen, let me tell you something. If I fell down, I'd rock myself to sleep.' Columnist Norman Chad on ParcelIs: 'It is a wonder of nature that caterpillars turn into butterflies. It is a wonder of ParcelIs that Vinny Testqaverde has turned into Joe Namath.... If he told his players the Earth were flat, none of them would cross the street. He could stare at a blue sky so hard, it becomes cloudy.' Jets running back Keith Byars on ParceIls: 'If he tells you there's cheese on top of the mountain, you'd better bring crackers.'
